‘Some people fail to understand the nature of press release’
Srinagar: The rumours about the ‘death’ of ailing octogenarian separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani created chaos across Kashmir Valley.
The will (last wish) of Geelani that went viral on social media on Wednesday evening was taken as the ‘death’ of ailing leader. A press release from Geelani led ‘All Parties Hurriyat (Freedom) Conference’ went viral on social media networking sites. The ‘urgent press release’ talked about the last wishes of Geelani and expressed concern over the falling health of the leader. It said that people are anxious and concerned about the health of incarcerated leader while the communication clampdown only adds to the worries of the people.
The press release clarified certain things and talked about the last wishes of Geelani. As soon as the press release went viral, rumours about the death of Geelani started making rounds. Police sought cooperation from people and warned rumour mongers of stern action. A Hurriyat worker told Kashmir News Trust that some people failed to understand the nature of the press release and started spreading rumours. “Like every human-being, Geelani too made his will and it should not be taken otherwise. He is alright and responding to the treatment very well,” he said.
Authorities suspended 2G internet service to stop rumour mongers from spreading rumours. A police official said that stern action will be taken against those spreading fake reports.
Meanwhile, a team of doctors are regularly conducting health check-up of ailing leader at his Hyderpora based residence. (KNT)
