Beerwah: Drivers operating from the Sukhnag Sumo Stand in Beerwah and local shopkeepers have expressed strong resentment over the poor state of public bathrooms at the busy transport hub, urging the administration to initiate urgent repairs and renovations.

The affected drivers said the washrooms have been in deplorable condition for years, forcing commuters and transport workers to suffer daily inconvenience. “The bathrooms are unhygienic and almost unusable. We have been appealing to authorities repeatedly, but our pleas have gone unheard,” said a driver operating from the stand.

Local shopkeepers, who depend heavily on daily footfall at the stand, voiced similar frustration. They said the lack of clean and functional sanitation facilities is not only a public health concern but also affects business. “People avoid staying here longer because of the stench and poor hygiene. It’s embarrassing and harmful for everyone,” said a shopkeeper.

Responding to mounting public pressure, officials from the office of the Executive Officer (EO) Beerwah conducted an on-site inspection of the bathrooms. Following the visit, the EO assured the drivers and shopkeepers that reconstruction and repair work would commence soon.

Locals have cautiously welcomed the official visit but remain skeptical until the promised repairs are visible on the ground. “We hope this time they actually act, not just inspect. We’ve been waiting for years,” said a local resident.

With the Beerwah Sumo Stand serving as a vital transport link for hundreds of passengers daily, the community has urged the municipal authorities to prioritize the repair work and ensure proper sanitation facilities are maintained in the future. [KNT]
