Civil secretariat, Raj Bhavan figure in survey list
Srinagar: A high-level team from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is assessing seismic vulnerability of key government buildings including civil secretariat and Raj Bhavan in J&K.
According to wire service—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), a team comprising engineers from the NDMA and its consultants (Design Development Forum –Agha Khan Development Network) is undertaking visual rapid survey of the buildings identified by the Department of Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction.
The team is visiting the identified buildings as part of their feasibility study for undertaking retrofitting of the identified buildings under the National Seismic Risk Management Program.
As per—KNO, the buildings identified included civil secretariat complex Srinagar/ Jammu, Raj Bhavan Srinagar/ Jammu, divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners offices, police headquarters Srinagar/ Jammu, all district jails, both IGP offices , Government Medical Colleges, SKIMS Soura, office complexes of superintendents of police, Doordarshan stations, radio stations, Srinagar Municipal Corporation , Jammu Municipal Corporation and other important buildings.
The team will also survey district hospitals and colleges and schools identified by directors of these departments.
It is worthwhile to mention here that J&K is highly vulnerable to earthquakes as it falls under seismic zone V and IV. The 2005 earthquake wreaked on both sides of the Line of Control in Kashmir and killed more than 80,000 people, injured more than 100,000, and left three million homeless—(KNO)
