SRINAGAR : To protest the killing of a young student in firing by security forces last night, a spontaneous shutdown was observed in Shopian district of south Kashmir.
All shops, school, colleges and other business establishments are closed in the district while traffic is off the roads.
Adil Farooq Magray, a student of 1st year, was killed last night after forces opened fire on protesters who were trying to disrupt a cordon and search operation and help militants escape in Ganawpora village of the district.
Reports said that the security forces on a tip-off about the presence of militants had launched a search operation at village Ganowpora in Shopian.
However, as the news spread about the search operation, people took to the streets raising slogans and trying to march towards the cordoned off area. The security forces opened fire when the demonstrators pelted stones, they said, adding Adil was injured. The injured was rushed to the district hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
