Day Long Seminar On Cyber Crimes against Women – Precautions and Strategies, held at Baramulla

Srinagar: In consonance with the initiative of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India to combat cybercrime through the implementation of the scheme called the “Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre” (14C), The Department of Computer Applications at Govt. College for Women, Sopore observed Cyber Jagrukta Diwas on 9th of December, 2021 and organized a seminar on Cyber Crimes against Women – Precautions and Strategies to impart knowledge to the students and staff about the various issues related to cybercrime and its prevention.

Principal of the College Prof. F.R. Beigh formally welcomed the Guests and also highlighted the need of such initiatives in the contemporary times.

The lecture on the theme was delivered by Dr. Faheem Masoodi, Assistant Professor at University of Kashmir. Dr Masoodi who is a well-known expert on the subject spoke on different emerging trends in Cybercrime like hacking, phishing, spoofing and defamation – Issues and Challenges related to the use of Social Media specific to women.

A Poster Presentation Contest on the theme was also held on the occasion for creating mass awareness. The College also designated a group of 30 students as Cyber Crime Volunteers.

The highlight of the seminar was a panel discussion moderated by Prof. Zubair Masoodi, Head Department of Computer Applications with experts deliberating on the increasing incidents of Cyber Crime.

The panellists thoroughly discussed various cyber threats like online banking fraud; circulation of fake news through the internet; cyber defamation; the impact of social media on the society, specifically on women and challenges of addiction to smartphones. The panellists agreed that there are abundant challenges in dealing with cyber-crimes and that there is a dire need for everyone in contemporary times to learn the ways to manage cyber threats and to prevent becoming a victim of such crimes. Students actively participated in the discussion by asking numerous questions regarding the theme.

This seminar observed the gracious presence of Mr. Sudhanshu Verma, Senior Superintendent of Police, Sopore as Chief Guest, Dr. Faheem Masoodi from University of Kashmir, Mr. Aazim Mushtaq a well-known Criminal Lawyer and an expert on Cyber Law, Prof. Tanveer Ahmad from Government Degree College Baramulla and Mr. Mir Wasim, Regional Director ICICI Bank Ltd. Besides staff and students, this seminar was attended by prominent people from media and representatives of various Sponsors.

The day-long seminar was sponsored by ICICI Bank, Print INC Sopore and Global Automations.

Dr. Aaliya Lone in her concluding remarks thanked all the dignitaries, staff and students including people from media for participating in the event and making it successful.
