Srinagar: Jammu Kashmir Apni Party President Syed Muhammad Altaf Bukhari on Friday strongly opposed the proposal by Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited to impose a twenty percent surcharge on electricity tariffs during peak hours, calling it a serious injustice to people facing economic distress.

Bukhari said a large section of the population relies on tourism and horticulture, both of which have suffered heavy losses this year. He said other business sectors are also witnessing a decline, leaving families with shrinking incomes and rising financial pressure.

He said increasing electricity charges during mornings and evenings, when households depend on power the most amid freezing temperatures, is unreasonable and insensitive.

Bukhari added that the government has a moral duty to factor in people’s hardships before considering such punitive measures. With harsh winter conditions approaching, he urged authorities to show mercy to those who are already burdened and struggling. [KNT]
