Kargil: Chief Executive Councillor of Kargil, Dr. Jaffer Akhoon, on Saturday termed the recent creation of new districts in Ladakh as “discriminatory,” alleging that Kargil has been unfairly treated in the reorganization process.
Akhoon said that while new districts were created in Zanskar and Drass, long-standing demands to grant district status to Sanko, Shargol, and Chiktan were ignored. He said Kargil has effectively received only two districts, despite some proposed areas in Kargil have a larger population.
He expressed disappointment that Sanko subdivision, Shargol, and Shakar Chiktan were left out despite repeated representations to the administration.
The CEC while addressing a press conference said that the issue had been raised earlier with both previous and present Lieutenant Governors, but no action was taken. He also said the matter had been taken up twice with the Union Home Minister, who had indicated that the creation of districts may have been based on geographical area rather than population.
Akhoon as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust said several villages from Kargil have been detached and added to other districts, which he described as a “major loss” for the region.
He clarified that the leadership in Kargil is not opposed to the creation of new districts but objected to what he termed as “injustice” in the process and the criteria applied. [KNT]
