Sopore: A forest fire broke out in the Rampora Rajpora area of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Thursday evening, triggering a swift response from Fire and Emergency Services.
Officials said the blaze erupted in forest compartment number 33 where dry bushes and grass caught fire, creating a threat of the flames spreading deeper into the forest range. The affected area falls under the jurisdiction of Fire Station Sopore and Shalnaar Sopore, which are located at a distance of around 19 kilometres from the incident spot.
An official said the control room received information about the fire, following which fire tenders were rushed to the location without delay. Firefighting teams launched immediate efforts to prevent the fire from spreading and to protect nearby forest terrain.
“The operation is still underway and our teams are on the ground working continuously to bring the situation under full control,” an official said, adding that a detailed assessment of damage would be carried out once the flames were fully extinguished.
Preliminary inputs indicate the possibility of mischief, though officials said the exact cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed and will only be ascertained after a formal inquiry.
Fire and forest department teams continued their efforts late into the evening to ensure the blaze was fully contained and no fresh flare-ups were reported till the last update. [KNT]
