Here are the excerpts from the Interview :
Reporter: Today we’re talking about a severe issue which has spread not only in Kashmir but worldwide. We’re talking about cancer today. So tell us what is cancer and how it enters a human body or how a person get’s involved in this disease?
Doctor: As you already said that it has became very common if we’ll talk about it on a broader term actually there are abnormal cells in our body which get divided uncontrollably and they don’t die. They get divided as you also said that it spreads to other organs too. Cancers are of different types. Every organ faces different type of cancer. In Kashmir people are more prone to stomach and esophageal cancers.
Reporter: What are the signs and symptoms of cancer and how can a person know if he’s suffering from cancer or anyone in the family is suffering from this disease?
Doctor: Every cancer has different types of signs and symptoms. The best way is screening and a person should go for regular health check-ups after every 6 months. After 40 a person should go for endoscopy, colonoscopy, urine examination etc so that he might get to know all the ailments on time and then it’s easy to diagnose him. If anyone has family history like mom, dad or grandparents have been diagnosed with cancer or any other disease then a person should be more careful about his health and he also should go for regular checkups so that he won’t face any problem in future. For instance, if a person says he has regular indigestion, vomiting, or he has blood In urine or stool, diarrhea or irritation or itching during urination he’s having stomach cancer. Every cancer and every disease has it’s different symptomology.
Reporter: According to a research it’s been said that people who fall in the age group of 40-70 are more prone to cancers. Is cancer a genetic disorder or it have other reasons?
Doctor: Genes definitely play an important role. According to many researches if there’s a cancer history in family others are also predisposed to cancers but at the same time our lifestyle, our food or medication they also play a key role. Not having meals on time, having very spicy food, junk foods, Coldrinks, smoking all these things altogether have adverse effects on our health.
Reporter: When a person comes to know that he’s having cancer he gets stressed at that particular time. So how should a patient deal with it?
Doctor: When a person Comes to know that he has cancer he thinks that world has ended and he’ll die soon. But it’s not true many cancers are curable and there are cancers in which you can live quality life. And it depends on the stage of cancer. Here psychology plays an important role. A person needs to be optimistic at this time but if he loses all his faith and think he’ll die then medicines also don’t work at that time. These patients should keep themselves calm and try to fight back with the disease. Treatments are available today for almost every diseases nowadays. A patient should visit a concerned specialist for his disease.
Reporter: According to research, Some patients don’t show any symptom at all and suddenly he comes to know he’s having last stage of cancer. How you do the treatment at that time and what Will be the patient’s life span after treatment?
Doctor: We have diagnosed patients who come to us during their last stage and at that time there’s no chance of surgery and chemotherapy at that time we provide them palliative treatment in which we try to control the pains of a patient to make their lives comfortable so that they’ll be able to eat and fight the disease and pain and he should have proper nutritious diet at that time.
Reporter: How you start the treatment of a cancer patient? At what stage you recommend medication and what stage you recommend therapies and surgeries?
Doctor: As I already mentioned that there are different types of cancers. Some cancers are treated with chemotherapies only while some cancers need combination of chemotherapies, radiotherapies and surgeries. And it depends on cancer type and stages. For instance our food pipe (oesophagus) has cancer in lower side we treat that with chemotherapies and surgeries but if it’s in middle or upper side we provide radiotherapy and chemotherapy while in stomach cancers again it depends on stage of cancer then accordingly we provide radiotherapies, chemotherapies or go for surgeries. In intestinal cancers we treat it with radiotherapies and surgery and they both play their roles together.
Reporter: Our lifestyle has changed people prefer junk foods what’s the effect of junk foods on our health?
Doctor: Our health is mostly dependent on our stomach. People eat preserved, frozen foods that contain chemicals which are harmful for our body. At the end of the day these food change our metabolism and it effects our health giving birth to these kinds of diseases.
Reporter: Which is the most dangerous cancer?
Doctor: Cancer itself is dangerous and aggressive if it’s not treated on time every cancer become dangerous and aggressive.
Reporter: You are a laparoscopic surgeon from a longtime so how effective are laparoscopic surgeries for Cancer patients and other patients and what are the advantages of laparoscopic surgeries?
Doctor: At first when we started cancer surgeries we had to a cut a person’s belly in intestinal or stomach cancers and patients had to stay in hospital for 15 days minimum and open surgeries lead to huge blood loses. Nowadays things have changed laparoscopy has made surgeries easier and patient recovers in 3 days maximum with no blood loss. Through laparoscopy were able to see the things inside easily we clear the lymph nodes easily and a patient is also comfortable in this kind of surgery. Overall it’s a very good option for a patient.
Reporter: Since last year we’re facing Covid-19 whole world is facing this fatal issue. If a Covid-19 positive patient needs an emergency surgery which surgery is provided to such patients open or laparoscopic surgery?
Doctor: As Government has set up Covid centers throughout the valley .First of all a patient should visit that center. If he directly comes to us like any other hospital we have to take care of proper SOP’s then we can do both open and laparoscopic surgery depending upon patient’s disease. There are surgeries which are done by open surgery only like C-section, rest 99% of surgeries can be done through laparoscopy.
Reporter: You are a laser surgeon also so what’s this laser treatment and whom you provide laser treatment?
Doctor: I’m the first laser surgeon of the valley. We use laser in different fields, Mostly we do this treatment in piles, hemorrhoids, varicose veins and fistula. It’s a daycare treatment which is easy for patients. This treatment takes only 7 hours to recover. Next day a patient can easily resume his work. This treatment has no cuts we treat it with laser, patients feel comfortable and there’s almost no risk of complications.
Reporter: What kind of anesthesia you give to cancer patients or other patients and why?
Doctor: It depends on type of surgery and in umbilical surgeries we give spinal anesthesia usually and we provide general anesthesia in upper part of umbilica.
Reporter: What should we do in our daily life to prevent getting cancers or other disease?
Doctor: We should change our lifestyle. We should wake up earlier, doing exercises, drinking lot of water, eating fresh fruits and veggies and salads. We should avoid non-veg, junk foods, Coldrinks and smoking. If we’ll avoid these things there are less chances of facing these diseases. Basically, we should go for normal simple life.
