Srinagar: The Animal Husbandry Department has introduced the internationally renowned Saanen goat breed, popularly known as the “Milk Queen,” in Kashmir under a special initiative aimed at strengthening the region’s dairy and livestock sector.

Officials said the Saanen goat, originally from Switzerland, is globally recognized for its exceptionally high milk-producing capacity and adaptability in organized dairy farming.

The introduction of the breed is expected to benefit local farmers by improving milk production and enhancing income opportunities in the livestock sector.

An official told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to modernize animal husbandry practices in Jammu and Kashmir by introducing high-yield and scientifically managed livestock breeds.

The Saanen goat is characterized by its white coat, calm temperament and strong dairy performance. The breed is widely used in commercial goat farming across several countries due to its milk productivity.

The official said selected farmers and livestock units would be provided support and guidance regarding breeding, feeding and management practices linked to the new species.

The department believes the move could help diversify dairy resources in Kashmir and encourage scientific goat farming among rural households.

The introduction has generated interest among livestock farmers and dairy entrepreneurs, particularly in areas where goat rearing remains a major source of livelihood. [KNT]
