Srinagar: The Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) is set to draft Jammu and Kashmir’s first dedicated anti-drug policy framework following a two-day conclave sponsored by Khyber Cement, organizers said on Wednesday.

The workshop, titled “Drug-Free Society: Call for Collective Action,” was held on May 4 and 5 by IUST’s Centre for Good Governance and Policy Analysis under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Shakil Ahmad Romshoo.

Officials said the framework, based on recommendations emerging from the conclave, would be formally submitted to the Jammu and Kashmir government in the coming period.

The event brought together policymakers, doctors, academics, law-enforcement officials, civil society groups, students and youth representatives to deliberate on measures required to address rising substance abuse in the region.

Ghulam Nabi Itoo and senior university administrators also participated in the discussions.

According to organizers, the proposed policy document aims to provide actionable recommendations covering prevention, treatment, awareness, enforcement, rehabilitation and community participation.

Officials associated with the initiative said Jammu and Kashmir currently lacks a dedicated policy framework specifically focused on tackling drug addiction despite growing concerns over substance abuse.

Speaking during the event, Umar Tramboo said the company considered the initiative part of its broader social responsibility.

“Our responsibility extends beyond building infrastructure. It is about helping build a healthier and more resilient society,” he said.

Wasim Ahmed Khan said collective community participation was necessary to address substance abuse among youth.

The conclave was organized in alignment with the national anti-drug campaign and focused on creating coordinated institutional and social responses to the issue.

Khyber Cement said its support for the initiative forms part of its ongoing involvement in areas including education, healthcare, sports and youth development in Jammu and Kashmir. [KNT]
