Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir is bracing for an intense heatwave over the next three days, with weather officials predicting unusually high temperatures, particularly on Thursday and Friday.

The plains of Kashmir are likely to witness a significant spike, with maximum temperatures expected to reach as high as 34°C—an unseasonal surge that may break multiple records for this time of the year.Meteorologists have issued advisories warning of potential heat stress, especially for children, the elderly, and those with health conditions.

The soaring temperatures have sparked concern among farmers and orchardists, who fear the heat could damage crops if the spell extends.“This is not typical weather for May in Kashmir. The temperatures we are expecting in the coming days are more characteristic of peak summer in July,” a senior official at the Meteorological Department told the news agency Kashmir News Trust.

The department has advised people to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and take preventive measures to reduce the impact of the heatwave. While Jammu is already accustomed to high temperatures during this season, the unusual heat in the Kashmir Valley, traditionally much cooler, has taken many by surprise.

Authorities are monitoring the situation and have urged people to follow official weather updates and safety advisories over the coming days. [KNT]
