Srinagar: A moderate earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale struck parts of Jammu and Kashmir in the early hours of Monday, triggering panic among locals across the Valley, particularly in Srinagar and adjoining north Kashmir areas.
According to preliminary information from the Android Earthquake Alerts System, the earthquake occurred at around 5:35 am IST, with its epicentre located approximately five kilometres from Hanjiwera Bala. The tremors were felt across a wide region, including Srinagar, Baramulla, Sopore, Ganderbal, Pulwama and surrounding areas, while the impact zone extended into parts of Pakistan-administered Kashmir as well.
Locals reported being jolted awake by the sudden shaking, with many rushing out of their homes in fear. Windows, doors and household items rattled in several neighbourhoods, heightening anxiety, especially as the tremor struck during pre-dawn hours when most people were asleep.
No immediate reports of loss of life or major damage were received till the filing of this report. [KNT]
