Pulwama: Acting on credible input, Pulwama Police have arrested an individual who was allegedly impersonating a police officer and extorting money from locals in the Kakpora area of the district.
The accused has been identified as Altaf Ahmad Dar, son of Assadullah Dar, resident of Marval Kakpora. Police said Dar had been posing as an officer of the Special Operations Group (SOG), Srinagar, and was intimidating residents by threatening action against them while demanding money.
A case FIR No. 74/2025 under Sections 319/351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered, and the accused has been taken into custody. During the course of the investigation, several individuals approached police stating that they had been intimidated and extorted by the impersonator. Their statements have been recorded, and efforts are underway to identify other possible victims.
Officials said preliminary inquiries indicate that the accused may have used fake identification and false claims of association with law enforcement to deceive members of the public. Further investigation is in progress to ascertain whether any other persons were involved in aiding the act.
Pulwama Police have reiterated their commitment to protecting citizens from fraudulent activities and urged the public to remain alert against such impersonation attempts. Police have also appealed to people to immediately report any suspicious or unlawful behaviour to the nearest police station. [KNT]
