Pattan: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday said that the Lieutenant Governor is solely responsible for maintaining peace and order in the Union Territory.

Speaking to reporters in Pattan area of Baramulla district, Abdullah said, “He is the Lieutenant Governor. The entire police force is under him in Jammu and Kashmir. He is responsible for everything. Whatever happens there, he will take care of it.”

His remarks came in the backdrop of protests that erupted in Doda district after local lawmaker Mehraj Malik was detained under the Public Safety Act. The protests forced the district administration to impose prohibitory restrictions today, curbing assembly of four or more people to prevent escalation.

On the issue of a special assembly session in Jammu and Kashmir, Abdullah remarked that the decision lies with the Speaker. “Now people are saying that a special assembly session should be held there. That speaker will have to decide about it,” he said.

The situation in Doda remains tense with police and civil administration maintaining a strict vigil to avoid further disturbances. [KNT]
