Young surgeons, PG students benefit from 3-day int’l workshop on live robotic surgery

Srinagar : The three-day workshop cum conference on live robotic surgery, in which around 400 delegates participated, concluded at Government Medical College Srinagar on Saturday.

Prof Mufti Mahmood Ahmad, Head of Department, General and Minimal Access Surgery GMC Srinagar, told  that the 3rd day of UROSURG-2023 was a mixed bag of scientific programmes which included guest lectures by the visiting dignitaries from UK Prof Gulzar Mufti, the doyen of urology, Dr Parvaiz, hepatobiliary surgeon from USA and Prof Palwinder Lal, Dorector & Head Department of surgery MAMC Delhi.

Among others who spoke on the occasion included Dr M R Attri, Dr Younis, Dr Fazal Parray, Dr Mohd Saleem Wani, HOD Urology SKIMS, Dr Arif Hamid Prof Urology SKIMS, Dr Ashaque consultant at District Hospital Pulwama, he said, adding that besides panel discussion on Bariatric Surgery, there were presentations by postgraduates of different institutions.

On the occasion, a state-of-the-art Stoma & Wound Management centre in the department of General & Minimal Invasive Surgery was inaugurated by Prof Masood Tanvir, Principal Govt Medical College Srinagar in the presence of Prof Mufti Mahmood Ahmed, HOD Surgery and Dr Muzaffar Zargar, Medical Superintendent SMHS Hospital.

At the conclusion of the proceedings, a valedictory function was held wherein the organisers, volunteers, PG students, SRs, OT staff and many others were felicitated for their whole-hearted support in the conference, Prof Mahmood said.

The second day of the UROSURG-2023 saw a demonstration of eight advanced laparoscopic procedures in urology and surgery by experts from the Department of General and Minimal Access Surgery, GMC Srinagar and those from Delhi and Mumbai.

Various procedures demonstrated were Laparoscopic resection of large gastric gist, eTEP, Laparoscopic Heller’s myotomy, Laparoscopic Hydatid cystectomy, Laparoscopic completion cholecystectomy, laparoscopic partial Nephrectomy, and RIRS with laser lithotripsy.

A live demonstration of robotic distal pancreatectomy was relayed live from Chennai. The audience remained glued to their seats and watched the procedures with utmost interest.

On the first day, about 12 cases of various urology and minimal access surgery were relayed live to the packed auditorium of 400 delegates from within and outside the country. Various procedures performed included Laparoscopic repair of UVF, Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy, Laparoscopic Nephroureterectomy and Supine PCNL. Among the minimal access surgeons who operated were Dr Anil Heroor, Prof Iqbal Saleem, Prof M R Attri and Prof Mushtaq Chalkoo.

“This rich academic programme has been formulated for the benefit of young surgeons, postgraduate students and DNB/MCH students of various academic institutions,” Prof Mufti Mahmood said—(KNO)
