Ganderbal: A young shepherd from the Gagangir Sonamarg area of central Kashmir’s
Ganderbal district handed over a musk deer fawn to the Wildlife Department on Sunday after finding the animal while returning home with his goats.
A Wild Life official told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that the youth noticed the lone fawn near a forested stretch while heading back to his home. Believing the animal to be vulnerable to predators and vehicle movement, he caught the fawn and carried it safely to his residence before immediately informing the Wildlife Department.
A team from the department reached the spot soon after receiving the call. Officials confirmed that the fawn was a musk deer species that had likely strayed from its natural habitat while foraging. The officials said the youth’s timely action prevented possible harm to the animal.
The Wildlife staff took the fawn into their custody for proper examination and care. They added that such incidents are increasing across areas near forest belts as wild animals often wander into human habitations in search of food.
Officials also appealed to locals to avoid keeping wild animals at home and to promptly inform authorities whenever such sightings occur so that the animals can be rehabilitated safely. [KNT]
