Sopore: Two persons from Baniyari Hajin village of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district had a narrow escape on Thursday evening after a Shikara they were traveling in capsized in the River Jhelum near Hatishah Bridge in Sopore area of Baramulla district.
Officials said the incident took place when the boat lost balance midstream, throwing both individuals into the cold waters of the Jhelum. Responding swiftly, personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), assisted by Sopore Police, launched a rescue operation and managed to pull both men to safety after a brief struggle.
Soon after the rescue, the duo was shifted to Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Sopore for medical evaluation. Eyewitnesses said there was no ambulance available at the time, prompting Sopore Police to personally transport the victims to the hospital, ensuring they received timely medical attention.
Medical authorities at SDH Sopore later confirmed that both individuals were out of danger and have since returned home safely.
The quick action by the SDRF and police drew praise from locals, who said their coordinated and courageous efforts prevented a possible tragedy. “It was their immediate response that saved the two young men,” said a local witness.
Authorities have urged people to exercise caution while navigating water bodies, particularly during the evening hours when visibility is low and currents are unpredictable. [KNT]
