Senior officers assess road conditions and snow clearance operations in Qazigund sector, urge commuters to follow advisories

Srinagar:- SSP Traffic Rural Kashmir, Shri Ravinder Paul Singh, along with DySP Traffic Kulgam, DTI Anantnag, and DTI Qazigund, on Tuesday visited the Qazigund sector to assess prevailing road conditions amid heavy snowfall and to monitor ongoing snow clearance operations on National Highway-44. The inspection focused particularly on the Vessu, Levdora, and Qazigund–Banihal (Nowgam) tunnel areas, which are crucial links for traffic movement between Kashmir and Jammu.

During the visit, SSP Ravinder Paul Singh inspected and reviewed all naka points established for effective traffic regulation from Marval and Pampore up to Qazigund. He also conducted on-the-spot briefings with all stakeholders, including officials from NHAI and RAMKY, emphasizing the need for coordinated and timely efforts to ensure road safety and the early restoration of traffic movement on the highway.

Officials informed that around 10 inches of snow has accumulated in the Nowgam area of Qazigund, with continuous snowfall reported on both sides of the tunnel. Although snow clearance operations are in progress, challenging weather conditions are affecting the pace of work and road restoration.

Speaking on the occasion, SSP Ravinder Paul Singh said that the foremost priority of the Traffic Police is public safety. He stated that traffic teams are working in close coordination with road maintenance agencies to clear snow and ensure safe driving conditions. He added that traffic regulation measures have been strengthened at critical points to prevent congestion, accidents, and inconvenience to commuters.

SSP Singh further urged motorists to strictly follow traffic advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions. He emphasized that travel on NH-44 should be undertaken only after official clearance from Traffic Headquarters J&K, as sudden changes in weather can pose serious risks.

He also said that, in view of the prevailing situation, commuters have been advised not to undertake travel until the road is officially opened and to strictly adhere to the traffic advisories issued by Traffic Headquarters J&K in the interest of their own safety.
