Baramulla: Heavy slippery conditions on the Gulmarg road on Saturday led to long traffic jams, causing major inconvenience to commuters and tourists heading towards the famed ski resort, officials said.
Authorities said frosty and icy road conditions resulted in slow vehicular movement, with a gridlock witnessed at multiple points along the Gulmarg road. Several vehicles were seen without anti-skid chains, worsening the situation and contributing to traffic congestion.
Police personnel deployed on the route advised drivers to use anti-skid chains to ensure safe movement on the slippery stretch. Officials said vehicles not equipped with chains faced difficulty negotiating inclines, leading to frequent halts and disruption of traffic flow.
Despite the massive traffic jam and harsh road conditions, tourists were seen stepping out of their vehicles, clicking photographs, and enjoying the snow-covered landscape. Locals said the festive mood among tourists continued even as traffic remained stranded for long hours.
Tourism stakeholders said they are hopeful of a further surge in tourist arrivals once air traffic operations are fully normalized following recent weather disruptions. They said fresh snowfall has enhanced Gulmarg’s appeal, which is expected to attract more visitors in the coming days.
Authorities have urged travellers to follow traffic advisories, use anti-skid chains, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak hours to prevent further congestion and ensure safety on snowbound roads. [KNT]
