Shopian: Security forces on Friday busted an old and damaged hideout in the Yarwan forests of Keller area in south Kashmir’s Shopian district during a cordon and search operation.

A senior police officer said that the hideout was discovered concealed beneath a few tin sheets. Upon inspection, it was found to be in a dilapidated condition with no signs of recent use. “Nothing incriminating was recovered from the site. The hideout appeared to be abandoned and damaged,” the officer said.

The discovery was made during a broader cordon and search operation launched jointly by police and other security forces in the dense Yarwan forest belt, which has witnessed militant movement in the past. However, officials confirmed that in this instance, the structure bore marks of long neglect and did not indicate current militant activity.

Security forces frequently conduct search operations in the forested tracts of south Kashmir to ensure there are no active hideouts or logistical support bases. In recent years, a number of such old shelters have been unearthed, some of which were previously used by militants as temporary shelters or storage points.

Authorities said the operation was precautionary and aimed at denying any potential regrouping of militants in the forested region. [KNT]
