Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader and spokesperson Zuhaib Yousf Mir on Friday expressed strong resentment over the repeated denial of permission to Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to lead prayers at the historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar.
Mir said such actions strike at the very core of religious freedom and undermine the principles of constitutionalism. “It is shameful that Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was once again denied the right to offer congregational prayers at Jama Masjid. Let me remind this authoritarian regime that Article 25 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees freedom of conscience and the right to freely profess, practice and propagate religion, is still very much intact without ifs and buts,” Mir said.
He added that flouting the fundamental tenets of the Constitution amounts to eroding democratic values. “Violations of this nature will only push society towards unrest and anarchy,” the PDP leader warned.
Zuhaib urged the authorities to immediately put an end to such restrictive measures and respect the constitutional rights of citizens. He also called for dialogue, protection of human rights and adherence to democratic norms as essential steps to ensure peace and harmony in Jammu and Kashmir. [KNT
