Srinagar: The decision of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to support the National Conference (NC) in the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections has signaled a significant shift in the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. The understanding, sources said, reflects a strategic alignment within the opposition bloc aimed at pushing through people-centric legislations in the ongoing Assembly session.
According to insiders, the National Conference has assured the PDP that it will extend full backing to the Land Protection Bill and the Daily Wagers Regularization Bill—two issues central to the PDP’s legislative agenda. The coordination between the two regional parties, despite their past rivalry, appears to stem from a shared stance on safeguarding state resources and addressing employment insecurity.
Political observers believe the move could redefine opposition strategy in the Union Territory’s Assembly. “Both parties realize that working in isolation weakens their collective influence. A legislative understanding could also pave the way for a stronger regional front in future political developments,” a senior analyst told Kashmir News Trust.
While the NC and PDP maintain distinct ideological positions, their cooperation within the Assembly is being viewed as a pragmatic step to counter policies perceived as detrimental to Jammu and Kashmir’s interests.
Party insiders indicate that further coordination on legislative matters cannot be ruled out, particularly on issues related to land ownership, employment rights, and administrative reforms. [KNT]
