Urges GoI to treat J&K issues through humanitarian lens

Srinagar: Member of Parliament (MP) from Baramulla, Sheikh Abdul Rashid Thursday appealed to the central government to open dialogue with the elected representatives and stakeholders of Jammu and Kashmir

He urged the Centre to see the region through a ‘humanitarian, not political lens.’

Speaking during the Parliament session, Rashid, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) recalled the statement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi about reducing the gap between New Delhi and people of Jammu and Kashmir. “It is a good sentiment but nothing has taken place practically.”

He also urged for the start of a dialogue with Jammu and Kashmir similar to the one held with the UT of Ladakh.

“I request members on both sides— the opposition and the government to see all the issues of Jammu and Kashmir from a humanitarian angle and not as part of vote bank politics”, Rashid said.

Highlighting the hardships faced by the people of the region over the past three decades, the Baramulla MP said, “The people of J&K have suffered immensely for the last 35 years. We want peace and tranquillity to return”.

Referring to the upcoming International Human Rights Day on December 10, Rashid said that he would begin a hunger strike in Tihar Jail, where he is currently lodged, to mark the day and reiterate his call for peace and dialogue—(KNO)
