Ganderbal: District Police Ganderbal on Monday secured life imprisonment for a man convicted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, with the court also awarding additional sentences and fines under the Indian Penal Code.

Officials said the accused, Varinder Thakur of Sariswa village in Bihar, was convicted by the Principal Sessions Court, Ganderbal, under Section 6 of the POCSO Act and sentenced to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 50,000.

The court further sentenced the convict to one year’s imprisonment with a fine of Rs 1,000 under Section 342 IPC and two years’ imprisonment with a fine of Rs 2,000 under Section 506 IPC.

Police said the conviction followed a strong trial in which the prosecution successfully proved the charges. The case was prosecuted by public prosecutor Shafat Ahmad Bhat, with additional public prosecutor Jehangir Rafiqi also arguing on behalf of the State.

The investigation was conducted by PSI Rayees Ahmad, whose role was described by officials as thorough and professional.

District Police said the judgment reflects its firm stance against crimes involving children and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring justice for victims through strict legal action.
