Jammu: The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has announced the suspension of the Vaishno Devi Yatra from October 5 to 7, 2025, in response to an inclement weather advisory issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

An advisory which is in possession of the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) states if weather permits the pilgrimage will resume on October 8, 2025.

“The devotees are urged to monitor official channels for real-time updates to ensure safety during this period of heightened weather risks,” it states, adding, “The decision comes as a powerful Western Disturbance approaches Northwest India, including Jammu and Kashmir, bringing forecasts of moderate to heavy rainfall in the plains and significant snowfall in higher reaches from October 4 to 7, with peak intensity around October 6.”

“Isolated areas in the Jammu region may experience very heavy downpours, thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and gusty winds up to 60-70 km/h, raising concerns over landslides, mudslides, and disruptions to key highways like the Jammu-Srinagar and Srinagar-Leh routes,” it states.

“This precautionary measure echoes recent challenges faced by the yatra, which has been repeatedly halted this year due to adverse weather and landslides, including a major incident in late August that claimed lives and prompted a prolonged closure,” the advisory states.

The Trikuta Hills, home to the sacred shrine, remain vulnerable to such disruptions during the monsoon withdrawal and early winter periods.

Authorities have advised pilgrims to avoid travel to the base camp in Katra until clearance is given, prioritizing safety amid the ongoing restoration efforts at affected sites.

The Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, one of India’s most revered, attracts millions annually but has seen intermittent suspensions in 2025 due to erratic weather patterns.

The Shrine Board emphasized cooperation from devotees, assuring that all necessary precautions are in place to facilitate a smooth resumption once the advisory lifts.
