Srinagar: Police across North Kashmir Range have intensified their crackdown on illegal mining, registering 129 FIRs, arresting 155 offenders and seizing 154 vehicles, in a major drive aimed at dismantling the sand mafia and safeguarding riverbeds.
The crackdown, officials, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said was spearheaded by the Range Police Headquarters Baramulla, comes amid growing concerns over rampant sand mining that has caused severe damage to riverbeds and fragile ecosystems.
Officials said the drive aims to put the so-called sand mafia under sustained pressure.
DIG North Kashmir Range emphasized that the campaign would continue with zero tolerance. “Illegal mining is a crime, not a career,” he warned, saying offenders would face strict action under law.
Police further stressed that “No License, No Escape” would remain the guiding principle of the operation, making it clear that only those with valid permits would be allowed to extract minerals—(KNO)
