Shopian: Shopian Police have seized five tractors, two dumpers, one tipper and one JCB that were being used for unauthorized extraction and transportation of minerals from Keegam and other adjoining areas of the district.
According to officials, a series of enforcement drives were carried out in response to reports of rampant illegal mining. During these operations, several vehicles were intercepted and seized on the spot. Five separate FIRs have been registered at concerned police stations for violations of mining and environmental regulations.
Police said that these cases, registered under FIR numbers 221, 225, 226, 227, and 228 of 2025, reflect the administration’s firm resolve to protect natural resources and enforce accountability. Each case pertains to the seizure of vehicles involved in the illegal activity, including multiple tractors, dumpers, a tipper, and a JCB.
A police spokesperson said that strict legal action is being initiated against all individuals found involved in mineral theft or unlawful transportation. “Shopian Police are committed to protecting the district’s environment and will not allow illegal mining to continue unchecked. A zero-tolerance approach has been adopted,” the spokesperson stated.
Locals have been urged to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and report any such illegal activities. Police assured that the identity of informants will remain confidential and that swift punitive measures will follow against violators.
The ongoing drive, officials added, is part of a larger effort to ensure sustainable use of natural resources and prevent environmental degradation in South Kashmir’s Shopian district.[KNT]
