Srinagar: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chowdhary on Thursday expressed disappointment over the delay in restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, saying that the people were expecting its return during the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament.
Talking to reporters after inspecting the Sanat Nagar flyover in Srinagar, Chowdhary said it was unfortunate that the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir, created by Maharaja Hari Singh, has still not been restored.
He alleged that instead of fulfilling the long-standing demand, the government at the Centre has tabled legislations that create an impression of colonial-style governance.
“Such laws were implemented by the English, but India is a free country where unity in diversity is the foundation and every religion is equal,” Chowdhary remarked.
The Deputy Chief Minister asserted that no one will be allowed to impose “draconian and suppressive laws,” adding that people of the region deserve dignity and restoration of their constitutional rights.
Chowdhary reiterated that his government would continue to press for the early restoration of statehood and ensure that democratic aspirations of the people are respected. [KNT]
