Uri: A dead monkey was found inside a water filtration plant in Chandanwari area of Uri on Wednesday, sparking concern among local residents over water contamination and alleged inaction by the concerned department.

Residents told GNS that although the carcass was removed from the filtration plant after intimation, the facility has not yet been properly cleaned or washed. “We are being forced to consume contaminated water, even as such incidents have become a routine now,” a local resident said. “The facility is without roof top and fencing, which is why such incidents are happening time and again.”

They alleged that there are several other water houses in the area without fencing and rooftops, allowing animals to enter the structures easily, many a times leading to their drowning. “We have repeatedly submitted requests to the Jal Shakti Department for cleaning, fencing, and roofing, but no action has been taken so far,” the residents added.

“We through this medium once again urge the higher authorities to intervene immediately into the matter,” the locals said.

When contacted, Assistant Executive Engineer, PHE Department Sub Division Uri, Peer Irfan Muzamil told GNS that the department is taking all possible measures to sort out the situation to the satisfaction of public. (GNS)
