Kishtwar: Several days after Warwan Maragi village witnessed a couple of cloud bursts, a team from the district administration visited the village to assess the damage.
Official sources told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that a couple of cloud bursts followed by flash floods have caused large-scale destruction in Warwan valley of Kishtwar district, damaging around 50 structures, though no loss of life has been reported.
Officials said that Margai village in Warwan bore the brunt of the disaster, with several houses, shops, and even the local Jamia Masjid suffering extensive damage. Debris has accumulated inside residential houses, rendering many unsafe.
The calamity struck after the region experienced four consecutive days of heavy rainfall. Terrified villagers abandoned their homes and took refuge in safer locations as the water levels rose, leaving the entire village deserted.
Road connectivity to the area remains cut off, further hampering relief operations. Teams from the district administration were flown in helicopters to assess the ground situation and are preparing for relief and rehabilitation measures.
The Meteorological Department has already predicted fresh spells of rain and snowfall in the higher reaches of Kishtwar, adding to the apprehensions of locals and officials alike.
Authorities said that efforts are being made to restore connectivity and provide essential aid to the displaced families at the earliest. [KNT]
