Waqf Bill Still Under JPC Scrutiny, Let Committee Complete Its Work
Jammu, September 15 : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) must be decided by Parliament and not by individual states or Union Territories.Reacting to Uttarakhand becoming the first state to implement the UCC, Abdullah said states were not entitled to take such decisions.”Let them do what they want to do till a law is enacted for the country. Finally, it is Parliament which will decide on this and not the individual UTs or States,” Abdullah told reporters, as per GNS in Jammu.He said that unless there is a law at the country level, such moves by states will not be final. “In the end, the decision will be taken in Parliament,” he said.On the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, the Chief Minister said no law has been passed yet and a Joint Parliamentary Committee is still holding discussions.”Let the committee do its work, after that Parliament will discuss its report,” he said, adding that Hurriyat Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had also presented his viewpoint before the committee.(GNS)
