Srinagar: Member Parliament Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Monday visited Ujala Hospital to enquire about the condition of those injured in the blast inside Nowgam police station last week. Speaking to reporters after the visit, he questioned what he described as serious lapses inside the police station and demanded a transparent investigation.

Ruhullah said sensitive material should never have been kept in a way that could endanger lives inside the police premises. “Responsibility has to be fixed. If it was an accidental blast, then prove it. That will be justice to the victims,” he said.

He added that those responsible for the lapses must be identified and brought to book, insisting that the findings of the investigation should be made public. “If it was not a militant attack, then investigate it thoroughly and let the public know,” he said.

The MP remarked that such incidents raise questions that directly reach the Lieutenant Governor, who oversees law and order in Jammu and Kashmir. Without naming political parties, Ruhullah said BJP used incidents in Delhi and Pahalgam for political gain. “We do not do that. But investigation is a must so that innocents do not become scapegoats,” he said.

Ruhullah also objected to punitive action being taken before the inquiry is completed. “Before the investigation is over, innocents should not be targeted. Under which law was the home of the accused razed to the ground without completion of the investigation?” he asked.

Ruhullah reiterated that a fair probe was essential to ensure accountability and prevent wrongful targeting. [KNT]
