NC Members Protest, Speaker Intervenes to Restore Order
Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed uproarious scenes on Wednesday after BJP MLA Shagun Parihar made controversial remarks while raising issues related to her constituency, referring to certain areas as having a “Hindu population” and describing locals as “Rashtriya Waadi log.”
The remarks immediately drew strong objections from National Conference (NC) legislators, who accused the BJP member of making communal references during an official debate. Several NC MLAs rose from their seats, shouting slogans and demanding that the remarks be expunged from the Assembly record.
As the uproar intensified, the Assembly’s Speaker intervened and urged members to maintain decorum. He assured the House that no comment violating the dignity or secular character of the Assembly would remain on record.
Despite repeated calls for calm, the protests continued for some time before the Speaker managed to restore order and resume proceedings. [KNT]
