Shopian: An eight-year-old boy sustained injuries on Monday evening after being attacked by a leopard in Chetragam area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district, officials and locals said.

The victim, identified as Rehan Suhail of Kashwa locality in Chetragam, was reportedly riding his bicycle around 7 p.m. when the wild animal pounced on him. Alert villagers rushed to his aid and managed to drive the leopard away, rescuing the boy from further harm.

“He was suddenly attacked, and it was a terrifying moment. We rushed immediately, making noise and throwing stones to scare the animal off. Thankfully, the boy was pulled to safety,” a local resident told the news agency Kashmir News Trust.

Rehan was rushed to the Sub-District Hospital Zainapora, where doctors provided first aid before referring him to Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag for specialised treatment. His condition was reported to be stable, though he sustained multiple injuries.

A Wildlife official said the attack reflects an increasing number of leopard sightings in parts of Shopian, particularly in areas close to forests and orchards. “We urge people to remain vigilant, especially during evenings. Parents should ensure children are not left unattended in vulnerable areas,” he said.

Locals in Chetragam said leopards have been spotted in their orchards and fields several times in recent weeks, creating fear among villagers. “These incidents are becoming more frequent. Authorities must intensify patrols and take measures to trap or relocate the animals,” a villager remarked. [KNT]
