Qazigund: At least twelve sheep were killed on Sunday afternoon after being hit by a rashly driven truck near the Zig Jawhar Tunnel in south Kashmir’s Qazigund area, officials said.
The incident occurred when a truck passing through the area struck a flock of sheep belonging to a local pastoral family. Eyewitnesses told Kashmir News Trust that the vehicle was moving at high speed when it rammed into the livestock, killing a dozen sheep on the spot.
The sudden accident caused panic among locals and commuters using the stretch, which is part of the vital Srinagar–Jammu National Highway. “The truck driver was driving recklessly and paid no heed to the animals crossing the road,” said a local, adding that the pastoral family had suffered a major loss of livelihood.
Police officials confirmed the incident and said that a case has been registered. The truck and its driver are under investigation, and further details about the incident are awaited. [KNT]
